Preschools in Sedona

Precious Stones Preschool is independent. West Sedona Preschool is run by the Sedona Oak Creek Unified School District, which is what the S.O.C.U.S.D. in its record stands for.

That difference matters more than the names suggest.

A district preschool typically follows the school calendar, closes for the summer and the school holidays, and enrols through the district rather than directly. It often costs less, sometimes has income-based or needs-based places, and it puts a child into the same system they will continue in. What it usually does not do is cover a full working day all year round.

An independent preschool is more likely to run through the summer and offer hours that fit a working week, and is more likely to be priced accordingly.

Which is right depends less on the setting than on your working pattern, so establish the calendar and the daily hours before anything else.

Check the license record

Arizona Department of Health Services licenses child care centers, inspects them, and publishes what it finds. Look each one up and read the inspection history rather than the prospectus: what was cited, how often, and whether it was put right. Ten minutes there is worth more than a tour, and it is the one record a setting cannot show you selectively.

Then the ordinary questions

The ratio of staff to children in your child’s room specifically, how long the staff have been there, what happens when a child is ill, and whether you can visit at a busy time rather than a quiet one.

Two is thin

Sedona is an expensive town with a small resident population and a lot of second homes, and childcare provision reflects that. If neither suits, the Village of Oak Creek is close, and Cottonwood has four preschools with their license numbers and capacities listed, about half an hour down the hill. For a lot of Sedona families that drive is the real answer.
