Pet services in Sedona

Humane Society of Sedona, 2115 Shelby Drive, is an animal shelter and nonprofit. PetSmart, 2356 West SR-89A, is the chain store for food and supplies.

Between them that covers rehoming and shopping, and not much else. Grooming, boarding and day care are thinner here than the town’s size suggests.

If you are visiting with a dog

The useful thing to know is not on this page: it is that The Village Veterinary Hospital at the Village of Oak Creek end does boarding and doggie day care. In Sedona that is genuinely valuable, because most of what people come here to do cannot include a dog.

Slide Rock State Park allows no pets at all between May 1 and September 30 and bans them from the creek year-round. Red Rock State Park allows none at any time. Summer slickrock burns paws by mid-morning. So a day of hiking or a long lunch often means somewhere for the dog to be, and that is worth arranging before you arrive rather than on the day.

The dog-friendly guide sets out where dogs are welcome, including the Sedona Dog Park at Posse Grounds, 950 Soldiers Pass Road, which is open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April to the first of October and closes Thursday mornings between 9 and 11 for cleaning. Both Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot, unusually for the Park Service, welcome leashed dogs on their trails.

Adopting

The Humane Society is where a lot of animals in this valley come from. Ask what is included, since a shelter animal usually arrives vaccinated and neutered, which changes what the first year costs.

Veterinary care

Sedona has three practices, on the Sedona vets page, and none of them publishes out-of-hours cover. The nearest genuine overnight hospital is likely Flagstaff, about forty-five minutes up Oak Creek Canyon in good conditions and considerably longer in snow. Sort that out on a calm afternoon.
