These four are not interchangeable, and the difference is scale.

The license is not optional here

Unlike landscaping or handyman work, almost nothing in this category is exempt. Remodeling means permits: electrical, plumbing, structural, all of it. The Arizona exemption only applies under $1,000 in labor and materials together, with minor work and no permit involved, which no real remodel is. So checking the license at roc.az.gov is not a nicety, it is the first step, and you want to confirm the classification covers the work as well as that the status reads active.

The three questions that decide how this goes

Who is actually on site every day, the contractor or subcontractors they have never worked with before. How change orders are priced, in writing, before the first one arrives, because there will be one. What the payment schedule is tied to, milestones you can see rather than dates on a calendar.

Ask for two references from jobs finished more than a year ago, not last month. A remodel looks good the week it is handed over; the interesting question is what it looks like after a monsoon season.
