Pet services in Cottonwood

Verde Valley Humane Society, 1520 West Mingus Avenue, is a nonprofit, and its main work is rehoming animals. It is on this list because it is where a great many people in this valley get a dog or a cat, and because it is the number to ring about a stray rather than a service to buy.

If you have found an animal

Ring the humane society first. They will know whether anybody has reported that animal missing, and a found pet reported in the right place goes home far more often than one quietly kept for a few days while you decide.

The same applies in reverse: if yours has gone, ring them early rather than after a week of searching.

If you are looking to adopt

Adopting here rather than buying is straightforward and it is considerably cheaper, and an animal from a shelter in this valley usually comes already vaccinated and neutered. Ask what is included, because that changes what the first year costs.

Worth thinking about before you commit: this is a hot, spread-out valley, a lot of properties are unfenced, and coyotes and javelina are a genuine consideration for small animals. A shelter will talk to you honestly about which of their animals suits which situation, and that conversation is worth having.

For veterinary care, the vets page has eleven practices across the valley, three of them in Cottonwood, including one that works entirely by house call. Only one practice in the whole valley publishes emergency cover, which is a gap worth planning around before you need it.
