Nonprofits and community groups in Cottonwood

Cottonwood has 19 nonprofits and community groups on record. They cover a lot of ground, from emergency shelter to work on the river. Nothing below is ranked. It’s just a map of who does what, so you can find the right one without scrolling the whole list.

If you need help now: the Verde Valley Homeless Coalition and Rise Resource Center both work on housing and basic needs. Angie’s House runs 11 sober-living and transitional housing homes around Cottonwood, plus a homeless shelter. House of Ruth Pregnancy Care Center supports pregnant women and new parents. Verde Valley Sanctuary is the valley’s domestic violence and sexual assault program. NAZCARE Serenity Circle Wellness Center does mental health and peer support. YES The Arc serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Verde Valley Senior Citizens Association runs the senior center. Manzanita Outreach works with families facing poverty. Call ahead. These are small outfits, and the person who picks up the phone is often the same person doing the work.

If you want to give or shop: the Society of St. Vincent de Paul runs a thrift store in Cottonwood, and what it takes in pays for their wider assistance work. Catholic Charities Community Services handles a broader range of family and social services across the region. Verde Valley Habitat for Humanity runs a ReStore at 737 S. Main Street that sells donated building materials, furniture, appliances, and housewares at cut prices, and takes donations of the same. Before you give money to anyone, look the group up by name in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. It’s free. It tells you the group is a real registered nonprofit, and it shows how recently they filed. Environment and outdoors: Friends of the Verde River and ECO Farm both work on the river and the land around it, doing restoration, education, and stewardship. Science Vortex of the Verde Valley runs science education programming for the community.

Community and civic groups: Old Town Mission is tied to Cottonwood’s historic Old Town district. The Verde Valley Community Development Organization and Verde Valley Leadership both work on regional economic and civic development. The Verde Villages is a community organization based over in the Verde Village area.
