Two centers, and it is worth being blunt about the arithmetic.

Ninety-four licensed places between them, and capacity is the ceiling the license allows rather than places available. In a town of around four thousand people, that is tight, and the practical consequence is that you should start looking earlier than feels reasonable.

Head Start works differently from the other. It is run by NACOG, the Northern Arizona Council of Governments, and it is a federal preschool program rather than a private nursery. There is no fee for families who qualify, and qualifying is largely about household income, with places also kept for children with disabilities. It follows the school year rather than running through the summer, which matters if you need continuous cover. Ring NACOG rather than assuming you do not qualify; the thresholds are more generous than people expect.

Its Black Hills Drive address is the Yavapai College Verde Valley campus, which is also where the college’s teaching winery sits.

Use the license numbers

Arizona Department of Health Services licenses both centers, inspects them, and publishes what it finds. Take the numbers above, look each up, and read the inspection history: what was cited, how often, and whether it was put right. That record is the one thing a center cannot show you selectively, and ten minutes with it is worth more than any tour.

If neither has space

Cottonwood is ten minutes away and has considerably more provision, including several preschools with published license numbers and capacities on our Cottonwood preschools page. For a lot of Clarkdale families that is the realistic answer, and the drive is short.
