Pumping or repair?

Routine pumping is maintenance. Every three to five years for an ordinary household, sooner for a large family or a small tank. It is booked, not urgent, and it is by a wide margin the cheapest thing you will ever do for a septic system.

A failure is a different call. Sewage backing up indoors, a wet patch or a smell over the leach field, or a tank that fills again within weeks of being pumped, all point at the system rather than the tank being full. That is contractor territory, it is permitted work, and it needs a license.

The size of your tank and how many people are in the house, because a company that asks those before quoting an interval is doing it properly. Whether they inspect as well as pump. And whether they handle the county filing if this is a sale.
