Senior services in Cottonwood

Both are in town rather than out on a highway, which matters more than it sounds: it means a resident who still drives, or a family member visiting daily, is not making a journey of it.

The distinction the brochures blur

“Senior living” covers several legally different things in Arizona, and the difference decides what happens when someone’s needs change:

• Independent living is housing. Meals and activities perhaps, but no personal care, and no health license behind it.
• Assisted living is licensed by the state and provides personal care: help with medication, bathing, dressing. Arizona licenses assisted living homes and centers and inspects them.
• Memory care is a further specialism, usually with a secured area and different staffing.
• Skilled nursing is different again, medical and separately licensed.

A community may offer one of these or several. We do not hold the license level for either of these two, so ask directly and ask for the license number, then check it against the Department of Health Services, which publishes licensing and inspection records the same way it does for child care.

The question that catches families out

What happens when the level of care needed goes up. A community that only offers independent living means a move at exactly the moment a move is hardest. One with assisted living or memory care on site may mean a change of apartment instead. Ask that first, before price, because it determines whether this is a decision for now or for the next decade.

Then: what the monthly fee actually includes, what triggers an increase, what the notice period is on both sides, and whether there is an entry fee and whether any of it is refundable.

Getting a fuller picture

Two listings is not the whole of senior provision in the valley. Home care, adult day programs, transport and meal services all exist here and are largely not in our records yet. The Northern Arizona Council of Governments runs area agency on aging services for Yavapai County, and is the right first call for anyone trying to work out what is available rather than shopping between two names.
