What the license actually covers

Mowing, trimming and planting are not contracting, and Arizona separately exempts a job under $1,000 in labor and materials together where the work is minor and no permit is involved. So in this trade a license tells you a company has gone to the trouble, not that the company down the road is doing anything wrong.

Where it becomes essential is retaining walls, grading, irrigation tied into the mains, and anything structural. Clarkdale has a lot of sloped ground, which means a lot of retaining walls, which means this comes up here more than in Cottonwood.

The water question

Ask what a proposed planting needs in July and what the irrigation will cost to run. That question separates a design that survives from one that gets replaced in two years, and it is the single most useful thing to raise before any money is agreed.
