Museums in Camp Verde

Take these two in order and you get the valley’s history in sequence rather than in fragments.

Verde Valley Archaeology Center & Museum comes first chronologically. It covers the Sinagua and the other cultures who lived here long before anyone built a fort, and it is the place that makes sense of the cliff dwellings you can see at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot but cannot walk through. It is in the Verde Village shopping center on Finnie Flat Road, past Bashas’, which is an unglamorous setting for a serious collection. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with last admission at 3 p.m. $10 adults, $5 seniors, and free for under 18s, students and Native Americans.

Fort Verde State Historic Park is the next chapter: the 1870s Army post, three house museums furnished to the 1880s, and the exhibits in the old administration building. Open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, $10 adults 14 and over, $5 ages 7 to 13.

Why the order matters

Most visitors do the monuments first because they are signposted from the interstate, then never find the archaeology center at all. That is backwards. An hour in the center, then Montezuma Castle, means you are looking at a building you understand rather than an impressive hole in a cliff.

If you have half a day: archaeology center, Montezuma Castle at exit 289, and Montezuma Well at exit 293, which is free. If you have a full one, add the fort.

Note the closing times

The archaeology center shuts on Sunday and Monday and takes its last admission an hour before closing, which is the combination that catches people out on a weekend trip. The fort is open daily. Neither is a place to arrive at half past three expecting a leisurely visit.

Both sites are on the Camp Verde things to do guide alongside the wineries, the market and the casino.

Museums

Verde Valley Archaeology Center & Museum is at 460 W. Finnie Flat Road in Camp Verde. It opens 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and is closed Sunday and Monday, so a weekend visit means Saturday. Admission listed is $10 for an adult aged 18 to 64 and $5 for a senior aged 65 and over. The phone number is (928) 567-0066 and the site is verdevalleyarchaeology.org. The museum covers the archaeology of this valley, and it sits close enough to the monuments to pair with one of them in a day.
